With the official launch of SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC) about twelve months ago, SAP started a new direction for its data and analytics strategy. Instead of using isolated solutions, companies are to benefit from a fully managed, integrated cloud platform that provides enriched data products, advanced analytics tools, and AI applications. SAP BDC forms the core element of an open ecosystem that integrates existing technologies and solutions such as SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) and SAP Datasphere, as well as third-party tools. The associated goal is to optimize the provision, management, and use of data.

SAP BDC consolidates SAP and non-SAP data

SAP Business Data Cloud stands out because it not only consolidates all data from SAP systems onto a unified platform, but also enables seamless integration with non-SAP data. Ultimately, business data from various departments within a company is consolidated into a semantically rich data repository, enabling SAP BDC to serve as a central hub for all business-critical data. Furthermore, SAP Business Data Cloud represents the next step toward a Business Data Fabric architecture. This structure makes meaningful data available to all users while preserving business logic and application context.

SAP still has work to do

The vision for SAP Business Data Cloud outlined at its launch is still entirely coherent and understandable around a year later. Nevertheless, it must also be noted that the practical implementation of this theoretical vision is still facing significant delays. In many areas, SAP has a responsibility to actually deliver the promised tools and added value so that SAP BDC can become a reality as a unified data platform.

The need to catch up extends not least to three aspects that are essential for the promised value of the SAP BDC: preserving the business context and semantics using data products and SAP Knowledge Graph, the availability of Intelligent Applications for all business areas, and the use of agentic AI that not only provides information but is also capable of independently analyzing business processes, prepare decisions, and, in certain cases, execute actions.

To-do for companies: Setting up SAP BDC properly

The idea of a unified, harmonized data foundation that integrates operational SAP and non-SAP systems and serves as the basis for data-driven corporate management and AI-powered applications is strategically sound. SAP Business Data Cloud addresses fundamental challenges faced by many companies: heterogeneous data landscapes, inconsistent business definitions, and the lack of semantic integration across system boundaries.

Even though not all announced functionalities have yet reached the expected level of maturity, companies should already be taking action regarding SAP BDC and doing their homework. To achieve maximum value, upcoming analytics apps and agent-based AI applications must be able to access a stable, enterprise-wide data foundation. They only deliver their full benefits if business data is consistent, semantically well-defined, integrated, and available in high quality. That is why now is the right time to strategically implement SAP Business Data Cloud. The goal is to define a target architecture, establish reliable governance structures, clarify responsibilities, and consistently integrate the system landscape. In this way, companies create a scalable, future-proof data platform – even for requirements that may not yet be foreseeable today.

Laying the foundation for tomorrow’s success today

Those who set up their data architecture properly today will be able to deploy and leverage intelligent applications, AI agents, and data-driven innovations quickly and profitably tomorrow. The crucial question is not whether agent-based AI is coming, but whether your data infrastructure is ready for it. And the answer to that question is SAP Business Data Cloud.
